While everyone likely has a grasp on how to maintain oral health at home, the basics of effective dental home care often go overlooked. Simple, everyday routines can keep your mouth and body healthy and improve your overall confidence. With that said, regular oral care is a must. In addition to completing the following home mouth care routine, schedule an appointment with your Orange County Family Dentist today.

Brush twice a day.

We’ve heard it our whole lives- brush twice a day, every day. While this saying might be a tried one, it remains true. Simply because you’re an adult does not mean you are exempt from getting cavities and other oral health problems. At least twice a day is recommended (after breakfast and after your last meal) for 2 minutes each time.  And don’t forget to brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth. Use only a soft bristle brush or, even better, invest in a Sonicare toothbrush which can provide up to 8,800 automated strokes a minute. Next, replace your toothbrush at least four times per year to ensure an effective brushing routine.  Never go to bed if you have eaten or had something to drink other than water since you last brushed your teeth.  Listerine is Dr. Turner’s favorite brand of toothpaste.

Floss daily.

Flossing is necessary to clean those tight spots in between teeth and at the base of the tooth and gum line where a toothbrush cannot reach. Flossing can help to remove food that gets caught in tiny little places in your mouth (such as in between teeth). If the plaque on your teeth is not removed by brushing and flossing, it hardens and attaches itself to tooth enamel (above and below the gum line) and becomes tartar which promotes gum disease, says Dental Greeley. Hold floss firmly in between your thumb and index finger and gently glide it up and down between your teeth. Curve the floss gently around your teeth and below the gum line. Be careful not to force the floss to prevent cutting into delicate tissue! Lastly, remember to use clean parts of the floss as you move through your mouth.

Don’t forget to use mouthwash.

An anti-microbial mouthwash, like Listerine, is the best way to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Getting in the habit of using mouthwash twice a day can rid your teeth, gums, and tongue of bacteria, promote strong teeth, and prevent tooth decay.
